is it just me, or is philz coffee getting sketchier by the day? yes, there are more couches and things now (yay) and free WiFI (double yay), but it seems every time i go in now there are more and more sketchy characters. once, a nurse came in and took phils blood while he was sitting on the couch. another time, there was a homeless crazy guy wandering around for an hour talking to himslef (loudly). im also pretty certain at this point phil is a loan shark...

The neighborhood is what it is. I have lived in that vicinity for going on 10 years and it is really only changing a little which is why i like to be there.
I must admit that when Phil hired the crack dealer who I have been seeing for the whole time except when he is jailed, I was a bit taken aback. i let Phil know how I felt about the dood and I don't think he comes in much anymore.

Last week when we were sitting outside a bunch of kids ran by kicking over a chair after ripping some guy off. It's the mission. :)
But then again, I'm new to Phil's and have only been going for a few weeks (just recently moved to the bay from Seattle). If anybody happens to see me drinking my coffee and indulging in a cigarette outside do come up and say hi.

Mon, June 13, 2005 - 5:43 PMi finally tried out ritual today, and it was not sketchy, no weirdos. here's my take: excellent coffee, excellent music. pokey service, messy counters and tables. would definitely go back. hopefully they'll work out the kinks so you don't have to stand in line forever for just a regular coffee.
i will keep going to philz, where bebe and all her friends are very welcome. it's good to mix things up.

i heard her telling phil that her sister laughed at her for having cancer. she was smoking while she was telling him this. i don't even know if it's true.
the good thing with her is you don't have to worry about her suddenly snapping--she did so years ago. -

I have seen a man emerge from the bathroom with a hood pulled over his hat, hacking up a lung, and leaving the bathroom smelling of burning plastic. Crack, anyone?
I personally can't imagine smoking the stuff myself, but I am certainly addicted to Philz, and part of that addiction is in the experience of being there. I don't even live in California, but I make a trip to Philz as often as possible.
Also worth the price of admission, as Andy put it, is the haunting voice of Sarah, the cherubic, rosy-cheeked gal who is often behind the counter when I am there. If you ever catch her singing, you will know what I mean.

Yes, it is the Mission, so a certain amount of craziness just comes with the territory. But Phil doesn't seem to mind when obviously cracked-up people come into his place of business. Perhaps these are his loan-shark clients?
